Hobart celebrating Victory in the Pacific 1945
A little girl standing on a safety zone pole on 16 August 1945. She is flying her flag in Macquarie Street, Hobart. A modern day photo was taken on 24 July 2020 and the 1945 photo has been overlayed onto the new photo.
People in Hobart were overjoyed by the news the Second World War was over and celebrated in the city streets.
The Sites of Significance Then and Now project compares significant sites around Australia in 1945 and 2020 for Australia Remembers 75 years since Victory in the Pacific.
The Mercury newspaper photographed Hobart people celebrating Victory in the Pacific in 1945. The locations where The Mercury photographed in 1945 were photographed in 2020 to compare then and now. Photo comparisons of Launceston sites in 1945 and 2020 can also be viewed.
Flying the flag from the Safety Zone in Macquarie Street, Hobart. This little girl was photographed by The Mercury on 16 August 1945. A modern day photo of the same site was taken on 24 July 2020.
The excitement was a traffic stopper. Crowds joined in the commemoration in Macquarie Street outside Hobart Town Hall.
