Florence Jean Baker joined the Australian Women’s Army Service in 1942 and was commissioned as one of the first two female officers from Tasmania. By the end of the war, Jean was the Commanding Officer of the female barracks in Papua New Guinea (PNG).  At the age of 26 she was given the responsibility for hundreds of female soldiers who served in the Pacific. Jean served as president of the Australian Army Medical Women’s Service for 50 years.
