Private Walter James Murphy

Walter James Murphy was the son of Margaret and John Francis Patrick Murphy of Alonnah, Bruny Island.

Walter Murphy enlisted on 28 March 1916 at the age of 18 and embarked with the 40th Battalion from Hobart on the Berrima on 1 July 1916.  Walter’ brother, John Francis Patrick Murphy also enlisted.

During World War One, Private Murphy suffered from septic foot and trench foot.

Private Murphy arrived home to Bruny Island on 17 May 1919 aboard the steamer Breone.

A welcome ceremony was held at the Alonnah Hall for Private Murphy’s return.  The Hall was decorated in shrubs, flowers and a red ribbon bearing the description “Welcome Hero”. The only other returned soldier present was John James Dwyer VC.

Private Murphy’s copies of his discharge certificate and other paperwork were lost in a fire at the Cape Bruny Lighthouse in 1946.
