Timothy Dillon

Timothy Dillon, of Port Cygnet, was 40 years old when he enlisted for World War One and 4 October 1915, and listed his next of kin as his brother, Edward Jonah Dillon, of Alonnah, Bruny Island. Edward’s son, Walter Francis Dillon, also enlisted.

Private Dillon was born on 17 November 1875 at Port Cygnet and was the son of Timothy Dillion and Catherine Joyce.

On 12 November 1915 he embarked from Melbourne aboard the H.M.A.T Orsova.

On 12 January 1916 Private Dillon was charged with using threatening language to his superior officer.  At the court martial held on 22 January 1916, he was found not guilty.

On 6 June 1917 Private Dillon was hospitalised in Cairo, Egypt, with a head injury.

On 22 October 1917 Private Dillon, of the 7th Light Horse, was temporarily attached to the Field Remount Section at Rafa, in Egypt.

On 24 June 1919 Private Dillon was accidentally injured with synovitis to the left knee.

Walter Francis Dillon

Timothy Dillon’s nephew, Walter Francis Dillon, an engine driver from Alonnah, Bruny Island, enlisted on 31 July 1916 at the age of 21. Walter, was the brother of Timothy Dillon, and the son of Edward Jonas Dillon and Agnes Dunckel.

Private Dillon served in France from 23 July 1917.  In October 1917 he was hospitalised with trench feet, a medical condition caused by prolonged exposure of the feet to damp, unsanitary, and cold conditions.
