William and Arthur Corney

William Corney

William John Corney was a farmer from Lunawanna, Bruny Island, who enlisted on 9 August 1915 and served with the 12th Battalion.

Private Corney was born on 21 August 1895 and was the son of Clarence Corney and Lucy Clinch.

On 31 December 1915 Private Corney was admitted to hospital with bronchitis.  During World War One he also suffered from septic foot and a sore heel.

Private Corney was killed in action in France around the 19-22 August 1916.

Private Corney was buried in the Courcelette British Cemetery in France.

Arthur Corney

Private William Corney’s brother, Arthur Colin Corney, also enlisted.

Private Arthur Corney enlisted with the 40th Battalion and embarked from Hobart on the Berrima on 1 July 1916.  He proceeded to France on 23 November 1916.

Private Arthur Corney was ill for much of the year 1917 and regularly admitted to hospital.  On 22 October 1917 he was diagnosed with pleurisy. On 10 March 1918 it was decided Private Corney was to return to Australia.  He was discharged from the Australian Imperial Force on 20 June 1918.
